Henry Rufus Garret was born 26 May 1866 at Greendale, Virginia, about six miles from Abingdon. Little is known of his early years, but he later reported that his parents provided "fairly comfortable circumstances" for their family which included four children. By attending local schools whenever they were in session, Henry was able to receive a public school teaching certificate and to begin teaching at a neighboring school, Barnes' Chapel. In the fall of 1885 when he was nineteen years old, after having completed two years of teaching, he entered Milligan College.

At Milligan, Henry's command of arithmetic quickly showed itself. By the fall of 1886, he was tutoring other students in mathematics. Upon his graduation in 1889, he accepted a request by Josephus Hopwood to remain at Milligan as a professor of mathematics.
