Emma Gertrude Pettengill was the third of ten children born to Rev. William R. Pettengill and Frances Libby. Her father was a farmer, and then at age 60 became an ordained minister.

In 1893 Gertrude married Sanford Adams. During the time of their marriage he was employed as a station agent at Poland Springs.

Aside from the three children linked below, the 1900 census indicated Gertrude had lost a child.

Gertrude died of heart disease. After her death Sanford traveled for employment. In the 1910 census the three children lived with her parents.
