Joseph Benjamin Adler was born May 31, 1908 in Johnson, Colorado, the son of Johann Friedrich Adler and his second wife, Maria Catharina "Mary" Hardung Hofferber Yost.

As a young boy he moved with his family to Nebraska, where he met Viola Mae Decker, who he married December 26, 1928. The couple lived in Nebraska, Wyoming, and finally Nevada, where they eventually divorced.

Joseph worked as a meat cutter, and retired in the 1970's. He married his second wife, Hilda Marie Ferretto, and they lived in Reno until Joseph's death in 1987.
