Daniel G. "Scoop" Hartwig, 62, Port Charlotte, died May 1, 2003. He was born May 2, 1940, in Toledo, Ohio, and came to Port Charlotte from there in 1962. He owned six Mobil Gas Stations in Charlotte County and received many awards from Mobil Oil Company.

He raised funds for the Florida Special Olympics and Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Charlotte County and procured more than $10,000 in grants from Mobil Oil Company for the Charlotte County School System. He volunteered with the Charlotte Harbor School for children with special needs and was a member of Knights of Columbus Port Charlotte Council 5399, Elks Lodge 2153, Eagles 3296 and Moose 2121. He was a member of St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church.

Survivors include his wife, Carol; children Dawn Janick, William, Debra Vargo, Stacey O'Neill and Danielle, all of Port Charlotte; his mother, Roselyn M. of Toledo; brothers Robert and Martin, both of Toledo, James and Richard, both of Port Charlotte and Thomas of Lexington, SC; a sister, Linda Welsheimer of Toledo; and three grandsons.

Visitation will be from 2-4 and 6-8pm Tuesday, with a scripture service at 7pm at Kays-Ponger/Royal Palm Funeral Home, Port Charlotte Chapel. A Mass of Christian burial will be at 11am Wednesday at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church. Entombment will follow at Restlawn Memorial Gardens. Published in Herald Tribune on May 4, 2003.
