Abram Cassedy was the son of Archibald Cassedy (1757-1819) and Elizabeth Sherwood 1766-1851). His grandfather, Archibald Cassedy, emigrated from the north of Ireland about the time of the American Revolution and became one of the settlers of Rockland Co., New York.
He graduated from the State Normal school. He studied law with Judge William F. Fraser at Clarkstown, New York and with Wilkin &Gott at Goshen, Orange Co., New York and was admitted into practice in 1857.
For 2 years he was he was appointed Deputy County Clerk. Then for the next 4 years he was clerk of the Board of Supervisors of Orange Co., New York.
In 1862 he was elected District Attorney of the county on the Democratic ticket, and served 4 years.
In 1869 he formed a partnership with Charles F. Brown.
In 1880 he was nominated by his party for Mayor and was elected with a large majority.
He married Margaret J. Drake, daughter of Dr. Charles Drake of Newburgh in 1861.
