"CHARLES FOWLER DIES
Again the Death Angel has visited Coal community and took a beloved husband, father, brother and friend at 4:30 p.m., July 12, 1939. Mr. Fowler had been in failing health for several years, due to his advanced age of 84 years. Charles Fowler was born June 1, 1855, in Batavia, Genesee County, New York, of English parents who had come from England to the United States to make their home. When he was a small child the family moved to Illinois, and in 1861 they moved to Missouri, the latter journey made in an ox-drawn wagon, took three weeks. They settled in Henry County, nine miles east of Clinton, bought land and built a house which is now the Maidens Fowler home. Here Charles Fowler grew to young manhood and December 9, 1879, was united in marriage to Miss Mahala Leonard. To this union five children were born, all of whom survive to comfort the bereaved wife and mother and are: Miss Anna of the home; Charles jr., and Leonard of Coal; Misses Gertrude and Myrtle of Clinton. He is also survived by the following brothers: William Fowler of Coal and Maidens Fowler of Clinton, and sisters, Mrs. Sarah Ginter, Miami, Okla.; Mrs. Mary Leake of Clinton, Mrs. A. E. Duden and Mrs. F. E. Duden of the Coal community. There are nine living grandchildren, Eugene Fowler of Clinton; Edgar, Gerald Burton, Olive, Irvin, Elvin, Hubert, Edwin and Merle of Coal; also one great-grandchild, Robert Eugene Fowler of Clinton who was dearly loved by his great-grandfather. In 1890 Mr. Fowler was converted and joined Tebo Baptist Church, being baptized by the late Rev. Thomas Briggs, and lived a consistent Christian life. He later moved his membership to Good Hope Church, where he was a valued member at the time of his death. Mr. Fowler will be greatly missed as he was a devoted husband and father; also a kind brother and neighbor to all in the community where he had lived on the same farm for more than 50 years. The funeral was at the home at 2:30 p.m., July 14, conducted by his pastor, Rev. Mustain, assisted by a former pastor, Rev. T. H. Phillips, of Bolivar. Prof. and Mrs. W. D. Dundas and Hobart, Margie and Derrell Sell sang "Does Jesus Care?", "Will the Circle Be Unbroken?", "In the Sweet Bye and Bye," and "It is Well With My Soul." Burial was in Englewood. Pallbearers were: Joe and Don McQueen, W.A. and R. I. Sheek, R. M. Eberting, and H. G. Turner. Honorary pallbearers were: A.G. Sheek, J.B. McQueen, J.W. Shafto, W.M. Puckett, Robert Wilson and Roy Lutz. Consalus & Peck in charge."
