John Leonard Niess enlisted as a private on 18 Aug 1766 in the First Troop of Georgia Rangers, Captain John Milledge, Commander. Pay Bill records show that John was enlisted until 31 March 1767. Due in part to the reduced threat to the west (French controlled provinces on the western frontier of Georgia), but more probably because of a reduction in military expenditures, the rangers were mustered out of existence on 31 March 1767.

The rangers were, in some ways, both the ancestors of today's Georgia national guard and state patrol.

On May 26, 1767, John Leonhardt Niess, and Christine Elizabeth Schmidt, daughter of Hans Johan and Juliana Ortman Schmidt, were joined in marriage in the Jerusalem Lutheran Church at Ebenezer. They had two children. Johanna Frederica was born March 9, 1770, and baptized March 10, the Festival of Commemoration and Dedication of the new Church after the morning worship. Johanna Frederica, 3 years old, died Nov. 25, 1773, and was buried the next day. Their second child, Gottlilf Israel, was born May 18, 1779 and baptized May 22, 1779.
