Walter A. "Walt" Balliet, 84, Rapid City, SD, passed away on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at Rapid City Regional Hospital.
Walt was born on May 22, 1929 to Jacob A. and Dorothea (Stroble) Balliet on the family farm northwest of Trail City, SD. Walt attended grade school at Fischer School and graduated from Northwestern Lutheran Academy in 1947. He took over the family farm from his parents in the fall of 1948.
Walt married Marjorie E. Nicholas on September 9, 1950. Walt and Marge moved to Mobridge, SD in 1966 where Walt became an insurance agent for Mutual of Omaha. Later, on July 15, 1967 Walt became a State Farm Agent in Mobridge.
He was a President's Club Member at both companies. Walt retired in 1982 due to health problems. During his retirement he enjoyed fishing and restoring old vehicles, especially trucks.
He enjoyed going south to Harlingen, TX during the winter and in 1996 Walt and Marge moved to Rapid City. In recent years, he enjoyed playing cards and visiting family and friends. He was a devoted family man and was extremely proud of his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Jacob and Dorothea, brothers, Alfred, Arnold, Albert, Glen, and Marvin and by sisters, Pauline and Bertha.
Walt is survived by his wife of 63 years, Marjorie "Marge" Balliet, Rapid City; two sons, G.L. "Jerry" (Lois) Balliet, Dickinson, ND and Jeffrey A. (Nancy) Balliet, Rapid City; one daughter, Judy E. (Dan) Smith, Rapid City; two sisters, Helen Petersen, Parade, SD and Eleanor Harder, Seal Beach, CA; grandsons, Jason (Kim) Balliet, Wade (Michelle) Balliet, Bennett Smith, Dillon Smith, Tanner Smith; granddaughters, Lisa (Roger) Balliet-Miller, and Jessie Balliet; one step-granddaughter, Lori El Aroussi; great-grandchildren, Paige Balliet, Will Balliet, Jake Balliet, Brynn Balliet, Adalynn Miller, Hatch Miller, Ashley Fite, Austin Fite, Zenayah Fite, Zayd El Aroussi.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the Shriner's Children's Hospital or charity of your choice.
Visitation will be on Thursday, October 17th from 5-7 pm at Kirk Funeral Home.
Funeral Service will be held on Friday, October 18th at 10 am at St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church with Pastor Peter Sulzle and Pastor Doug Free.
Interment will follow at Mountain View Cemetery.
