John was born in 1909 in a sod house six miles south and three miles east of Gage OK. His father, Leonard, passed away four months before John was born. Leonard died of TB. John and his mother, Hazel Bowman Peer and siblings, George and Maye, lived with Hazel's parents, the Martin Van Buren Bowman's until Hazel became acquainted with and married Walter Hendricks. Walter owned farm land three miles south and three miles east of Gage. John grew up on this farm helping his step-father Walter. Walter Hendricks homesteaded this land since that portion of Oklahoma was opened by a land run around 1890.

John married Ursa Jean Gray and they lived with the Hendricks until Jean left John and his son, John Douglas Peer. John became acquainted with Margaret Schoenhals from Shattuck OK and they married in Nov 1943, and lived on a farm one mile west of the Walter Hendricks farm.

In April 1947, a huge tornado known as the Woodward tornado started at White Deer Texas and headed northeast. This tornado destroyed Glazier and Higgins Texas and swept across farms southeast of Gage, killing three people before it continued to Woodward, killing many people. John's house and barn were damaged beyond repair. John and his family including Margaret, John Douglas, Loy Henry, and Marlene were in the house when the tornado moved the house eight feet off it's foundation. No one was seriously hurt.

John rebuilt the Hendricks place and lived there until he and Margaret moved into a new home in the City of Gage. They lived there until their passing. The old farmstead is now the home of Loy Henry and Phylis Peer.
