Edith B. Turner
1918 - 2013

Edith Marion Burgess Turner passed away on October 11, 2013 at Cascade Manor in Eugene, Oregon, one day short of her 95th birthday. Edith was born on October 12, 1918 in Los Angeles, California to Lysle P. and Abbey Mulford Burgess. Abbey died six days later of acute hepatitis and Edith was raised by her father until she was age 3 when Lysle married Alma Dodge. Together Lysle and Alma were Edith's loving parents for the rest of their lives.

Edith spent most of her life living in Southern California. She graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1936 and in 1940 received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Pomona College. It was at Pomona during the first week of her freshman year that she met her future husband, Stanton A. Turner. They dated throughout their years at Pomona and were married on August 31, 1940. Stanton was in the reserve officer corps and was immediately called to active duty after the attack on Pearl Harbor. Edith and Stan moved to a variety of military bases where he was a training officer. In March of 1944 they spent a few weeks together at Fort Dix in New Jersey, and her husband was then shipped to England, later to enter France at Utah Beach on the third day of the invasion. Meanwhile Edith returned home and soon discovered she was pregnant. Her husband, severely wounded in the hedgerows of France, was taken back to the U.S. on a hospital ship and returned to Los Angeles in time for the birth of their first child, Stanton Burgess Turner.

After the war, Edith and Stan lived in Los Angeles for two years, then moved to Alhambra, California where they celebrated the birth of their daughter, Marion Dodge Turner. They lived in Alhambra for eight years then moved to San Marino, California, where their children graduated from high school. During this time Edith was active in Oneonta Congregational Church, the local and state Parent Teachers Association and a member of the Huntington Hospital Auxiliary. In the 1980s they moved to Lake San Marcos, California, where they were both involved with local volunteer organizations. Edith was a member of the Assistance League of Escondido and active in the Lake San Marcos Community Church.

Edith and Stan were married more than 64 years. After his death in 2005, she moved to Eugene, Oregon and lived the remainder of her life at Cascade Manor. While there she was especially appreciative of the fellowships she made and the support of the Cascade Manor staff. Their kindness will always be fondly remembered by her family.

Edith was always known for her positive outlook on life. She was a kind, upbeat person who always had a compliment for whomever she met. Up to the end of her life she always had a smile and friendly acknowledgement for everyone who spoke with her.

Edith will be deeply missed by her family and friends. She is survived by her son Stanton Turner (Kathleen); her daughter, Marion (Dennis Mullen); three grandchildren: James Turner (Katherine), Michael Turner (Mary), and Kellie Mullen; five great-grandchildren: Flynn, Jack, Gavin, Sean and Kate Turner; and numerous nieces, nephews and their respective families.

Edith's family will gather for a celebration of her life at a future date. Donations in her memory may be sent to the Cascade Manor Resident's Assistance Fund, Food for Lane County or to Greenhill Humane Society.

Arrangements entrusted to Poole-Larsen Funeral Home.
