August C. Hoeltge was the son of William and Fredericka Hoeltge born in Missouri. His parents and siblings came to America about 1858 and settled in St. Louis, Missouri. His brothers were Albert, William, August and Louis.

He married Mary Sophia Brandhorst, daughter of Christian and Christina (Brinkman) Brandhorst of Illinois. August and Mary had three daughters: Amy C., Amanda A., and Minnie.
