Son of Sampson Marion Rutledge and Amanda Jane Walters. Husband of Iva Imogene Thompson. Educated at Ohio Normal University 1888-1889. Served his country in the Spanish-American War, Co F 2nd Volunteer Engineers, after which he worked for the Post Office in Havana, Cuba. He spent over thirteen years as a clerk at Ancon Hospital in the Panama Canal Zone during the building of the canal. He died suddenly of a heart attack just after boarding a bus in Ada bound for Lima, Ohio. He had no children.
