Charles Roy Mason, 90, died on his ranch in Green Valley on Wednesday, Oct. 16, 2013.
Descendant of a pioneer family, his grandfather began the Mason Ranch in 1860. Roy was born in Napa July 27, 1923, the son of Charles and Chloris Mason. Roy was lifelong resident of Suisun Valley. He attended Suisun Valley Elementary where four of his great-grandchildren are now students.
After graduating from Armijo High School in 1941, he voluntarily enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps, even though he had a government agricultural exemption. He received basic and amphibian tank training while in San Diego and was deployed to the Maui Amphibious Training Center. His tank was among the first wave of Marines to land on Iwo Jima beach during World War II.
After the war, Roy worked for a while with his uncle, a land developer on the San Francisco peninsula, but his heart was back in Suisun Valley where his mother and father grew apricots and grapes, and in Green Valley where the Mason family cattle ranch had its roots beginning in 1860 and continues today, to be passed down to his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
He served on the board of directors for Hospital de la Familia, Progreso Nuevo, Guatemala, which was supported by the men's club "The Family" in San Francisco, of which he was a proud member. He was privileged to have joined the volunteer "medical team" of surgeons and nurses on more than one of their annual trips to Guatemala.
Roy is survived by his wife of 67 years, Betty; daughter and son-in-law, Sarah and Frank Lindemann; two grandchildren, Curtis Lindemann and Jennifer King and her husband Kevin; and five great-grandchildren, Clayton, Tyler and Charley Lindemann, and Aubrey and Payton King. He was preceded in death by his son, Mark.
