US Presidential Cabinet Secretary, Governor of Wyoming. He served as the 40th United States Secretary of the Interior during the Administration of President Gerald R. Ford (1975). He served as the 27th Governor of the State of Wyoming from 1967 until 1975. Following his mother’s death, he was adopted and raised by his aunt and uncle. During World War II, he served as a radio operator with the United States Army Air Forces and participated in 35 air-combat missions of which include one with “Doolittle’s Raiders”. His experienced earned him five air medals. Following his return home, he enrolled at the University of Nebraska, from where he received his Law degree. He practiced Law in Wyoming, prior to his being elected Governor of Wyoming in 1966. He resigned from his position as Secretary of the Interior a few months into his tenure due to ill health. He resumed practicing law after leaving the government.
