Marshall Whiteman - a native of the "Keystone State," was born in Washington county, Pennsylvania, February 15, 1828. With his parents, Matthias and Elsa (Newberry) Whiteman, he came to Wetzel county in 1847, and in this county, Magnolia district, he follows the pursuits of agriculture, and gives attention to the raising of stock. October 31, 1850, in Wetzel county, were spoken the words joining in one the lives of Marshall Whiteman and Eliza Jane Buchanan, and the ensuing years have given them ten children: David Andrew, born August 24, 1852, died May 20, 1856; Phebe Hannah, September 15, 1854; Sarah Anne, February 20 1856; Melissa Jane, March 22, 1858; Elsa, September 18, 1860; Mary M., September 29, 1862; Frances Laverna, November 27, 1864; James Matthias, June 1, 1867; Virginia Belle, April 7, 1870; Delia Emeline, November 24, 1873. James and Sarah (Vancamp) Buchanan, natives of Wetzel county, are the parents of Mrs. Whiteman, and she was born in this county, June 3, 1831. In the war of the States, Marshall Whiteman enlisted September 10, 1861, in Company H, 1st West Virginia Infantry, and served until November 26, 1864, participating in all the fighting of his regiment during that time. He was provost marshal, 1864-5. New Martinsville, Wetzel county, West Virginia, is his post office address.
