Three Corleys married a Birdwell:

Sara Ada "Essie" Corley (niece to both Pet and Beulah) married George Birdwell (1887—1954, brother to Martha Ann and Robert below);

Pet Corley (1885—1970, Essie's uncle) married Martha Ann Birdwell (1871—1968, Essie's sister-in-law, sister of George);

Beulah Ann Corley (1883—1960, Essie's aunt) married Robert Randolph Birdwell Jr. (Essie's brother-in-law, brother to George).

That had to be some holiday together!

The Corleys and Birdwells were mostly farmers, but they were well-dressed, and a number of them went to college and found success in business.

Essie was "a farmer's wife." That is how she is listed in the birth certificate for one of her children. But don't picture a woman worn down by the years of hard rural labor. Essie was beautiful and elegant. In one photo she is immaculate in her dress, and jewelry adorns her ears and neck. Her hair is wavy and pushed perfectly in place.

She had six children. Ethon and Boyce were born on the front end in 1908 and 1911. Then there were two girls in 1915 and 1917, Jewell and Katherine. Rayford and Wintford were born on the back end--way on the back end. Ethon was sixteen when Rayford came along, and the youngest, Katherine, was seven.

Everyone called her Momma Essie.

[A Recollection--M.E. McWilliams, her great granddaughter ]
