On August 21 the 2d Battalion began operation in conjunction with elements of the 196th Infantry Brigade USA who were in heavy contact with NVA Forces in the Hiep Duc Valley also known as the Nui Loc Son Basin straddling Que Son and Thanh Binh Districts in Quang Nam and Quang Tin Provinces.
The first significant contact with the enemy occurred on August 23 when a squad from Company G moved towards a small knoll near the base of Hills 381 and 441. They were ambushed by NVA snipers and one Marine was killed immediately and lay where he fell. Any movement or attempt to retrieve the fallen man brought heavy automatic weapons fire on the Marines, ordered to pull back a fire team volunteered to recover their fallen comrade. Half way up the slope the NVA killed another Marine and drove the rest of the men back down. Marine air support was called in and the aircraft pound the hostile knoll until it appeared as a burnt scar on the ridge line.
A second attempt to recover the two casualties ended in failure with the loss of yet another Marine killed and two wounded. With darkness recovery of the dead would wait until the morning as more ordnance would be dropped on the knoll in an attempt to kill the NVA or drive them into retreat. Sgt Adams was one of the casualties; he was killed in action as a result of hostile rifle fire.
* Cpl William C. Adams was presented with the SILVER STAR Medal posthumously "For conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action ....while serving with Company D, 1st Battalion, 5th Marines on 2 June 1967...."
Casualties:
William Carl Adams
Stephen Earl Cunningham
Kenith Lewis Jarrell
