Funeral services were held Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock at the Bloomfield Christian Church for Charles L. OLIPHANT, lifelong resident of Bloomfield. Rev. Charles W. LAYTON officiated, and burial was made in Grandview Cemetery. Special music was provided during the services by the BEASLEY Quartet, with Mrs. Ray FULLER as pianist. Pallbearers were Homer TITUS, Joe HALDERMAN, Ellis COOK, Barton WONDERS, Earl NOBLE and Walter JONES. Mr. OLIPHANT passed away at his home on South Seminary Street at 7:15 o’clock Friday evening, July 14, following an illness of two years. His condition had been serious for several weeks and critical for a few days prior to his death. Born in Bloomfield on November 22, 1886, he was the son of Frank and Tima (BYERS) OLIPHANT. A lifelong resident of Bloomfield, he had been engaged in the farming industry until his health failed. He had been a member of the Red Men’s Lodge until his illness prevented him from being active, and he was also a member of the Bloomfield Christian Church. Surviving him are the wife, Rosa Lou (JACKSON) OLIPHANT; two daughters, Mrs. Bernard SAPPENFIELD, of Lyons, and Mrs. Bernard HEATON, of Bloomfield route 2 and four sons, Lawson OLIPHANT, of Plainfield; Paul (Tom) and Elmer, at home, and Marcus, a cadet at West Point Military Academy. Two sons, Delmar and Orval, and one grandchild preceded him in death. Also surviving him are eight grandchildren; three brothers, Leslie, Carl and Claude OLIPHANT, of Bloomfield, and three sisters, Miss Dora OLIPHANT, of Bloomington; Mrs. Homer FODDRILL, of Bloomfield, and Mrs. Grace HARRIS, of Bridgeport. The Lester Jenkins & Sons Funeral Home was in charge of the funeral arrangements.

Charles Lister OLIPHANT was born November 22, 1886, the son of Thomas and Tima (BYERS) OLIPHANT. He departed this life July 14, 1950, at the age of 63 years. Charlie, or “Alec” as he was known to many people, was born and reared in Bloomfield, and spent his entire life in Greene County. He attended the Bloomfield schools where he was active in sports, and he maintained that interest throughout life. He was a great lover of baseball and basketball, always attended the game and showed much interest in every play, as most usually one or two of his boys were in the game. His interest in outdoor life and recreation brought him in close contact with nature. He loved the rod and reel and like Peter, James, and John, he often said, “I go fishing.” Alec was a devoted husband and father. He was very proud of his children and was like a big brother to his sons and daughters. They claimed him their “buddy” in all sports. Early in life he joined the Christian Church in Bloomfield. He was married on August 15, 1908, to Rosa Lou JACKSON. To this union were born six boys and two girls. He was preceded in death by two sons, Delmar Franklin, in 1929, and Orval Wesley, in 1947. A grandson, Marvin, also preceded him in death. He is survived by his widow, Mrs. Rosa OLIPHANT; daughters, Mrs. Bernard HEATON, of Bloomfield, and Mrs. Bernard SAPPENFIELD, of Lyons; sons, Lawson, of Plainfield; Paul, at home. Marcus, at West Point, and Elmer, at home. The following brothers and sisters also survive: Leslie OLIPHANT, Bloomfield; Mrs. Homer FODDRILL, Bloomfield; Mrs. Dora OLIPHANT, Bloomington; Mrs. Grace HARRIS, of Bridgeport; Carl OLIPHANT, of Bloomfield, and Claude OLIPHANT, of Martinsville. Eight grandchildren also survive, and one aunt, Mrs. Nan WILSON, of Bloomfield.
