F1C US NAVY - WORLD WAR IILITCHFIELD - Robert L. "Bob" Coates Sr., 90, of Litchfield, passed on to eternal life with family at his side on Oct. 11, 2013 at the Maine Veterans' Home in Augusta. Bob was born in Providence, R.I., to Charles E. Coates and Pauline Gersdorff Coates on Oct. 2, 1923. He graduated in 1941 from Cranston High School in Cranston, R.I.

He enlisted in the Navy on Dec. 8, 1942, served on the submarines USS Hoe and USS Rasher in the Pacific Theater and was awarded several medals, being honorably discharged Nov. 5, 1945. He worked for New England Telephone & Telegraph for 38 years. He was a Christian believer and was involved in various churches over the years. Bob was a member of the American Legion, Escapees RV Club, Good Sam, Telephone Pioneers and the Submarine Veterans of World War II.

Bob was preceded in death by his brothers, Howard C. Coates and Charles E. Coates, and his late wife, Elizabeth "Lib" Bailey Keller Coates. Bob and Lib were avid travelers, making 18 trips across this country, Canada and Mexico.

Bob is survived by his former wife, Nancy Winslow, of Crystal River, Fla., and their three children, Jaye Coates, of Sarasota, Fla., Carol Markee and her husband, Kirk, of Nottingham, N.H., and Rob Coates and his wife, Meredith, of Litchfield; his grandchildren, Michael Markee and his wife, Heather, of South Lebanon, Jessica Coates and her husband, Thomas Sholly, of Lebanon, Conn., Rachel Cavanna and her husband, Casey, of Old Lyme, Conn., and Heather McAuley and her husband, Charles, of Littleton, Mass.; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
A private burial will take place at the Maine Veterans' Cemetery in Augusta. (Kennebec Journal 10/14/2013)
