Thomas Jefferson "Tom" Slay and his brother, Benjamin Franklin Slay, were both suspected as being members of the Arkansas Peace Society, a group of suspected Union sympathizers opposed to the Civil War. Tom enlisted on July 4, 1862 as a Private in Company "H" of the 1st Arkansas Cavalry Regiment, Union during the Civil War. His brother, Benjamin Franklin Slay, enlisted in the same Unit on July 23, 1862.
