some sources suggest John was born in Townshend; some transcripts of the marriage of his daughter state he was born in Landgrove, Vermont. The obituary published in the Vermont Phoenix (Brattleboro, Vermont) on May 15, 1896, states he was born in West Townshend.

During the Civil War, John served as a Private in Company D, 16th Regiment, Vermont Infantry from October 23, 1862 to August 10, 1863. He re-enlisted, and mustered in again as a Corporal in Company F, 17th Regiment, Vermont Infantry. He was wounded during the Battle of the Wilderness on May 6, 1864. John was promoted to Sergeant in May, 1865, and commissioned 2nd Lieutenant on March 11, 1865. He mustered out July 14, 1865. (Source, Vermont In the Civil War).

After the War, John and his family moved to Maine, and later to Beaufort, South Carolina. In Beaufort, he was a member of Dutton, Dale & Company, and later J.J. Dale & Company. In September, 1893, a storm severely damaged his business and the area, and John was noted for assisting people affected by the storm.

John married Orinda (or Orra) Merrifield on July 30, 1873. Their children include Florence, Orrinda, and Edward. She died about 1879.

On April 28, 1884 John married Henrietta Virginia "Jennie" Case in Winchester, Massachusetts. They had 3 children.

From the obituary in the Vermont Phoenix: "He was of a most generous nature, hospitable, enterprising, public spirited, remarkably devoted to his family and friends."
