Edward A. Angell III, 22, the owner of a local towing service, was killed early yesterday when his pickup truck left Putnam Pike (Route 44) and smashed into two utility poles.
Police said Angell was eastbound shortly before 1:30 a.m. when the pickup went off the right side of the road, snapped off one pole, continued across the parking lot of the Northwest Animal Hospital, struck a second pole and came to a stop on a lawn at 210 Putnam Pike.
Mr. Angell, who apparently was not wearing a seat belt, was thrown from the truck, police said. Investigators found no sign of skid marks, said police dispatcher Jim Watts.
Mr. Angell, who lived at 77 Pine Ledge Rd., owned Angell's Towing, in Harmony; he previously worked for the former John's Getty, in Greenville, and for E&I, Chepachet.
He was a 1990 graduate of Ponagansett High School.
Besides his parents he is survived by a sister, his maternal grandparents, his paternal grandmother, and a maternal great-grandmother.
He was the grandson of the late Edward Angell.
