Hugh Mason Allen, 87, passed away peacefully on Friday, September 27, 2013 at the Sunrise Assisted Living Facility in West Hills, California, after an 8 year fight with Alzheimer's disease.
Hugh was born in 1926 in a rural Nebraska town, Newport Nebraska, population under 100. He spent most of his youth in a slightly larger near-by town, Bassett, Nebraska. There he played on the high school football and basketball teams, played the cornet in the marching band and worked at the local movie theater as an usher. After graduating from Rock County High School, he attended the University of Nebraska. At the end of four years, he moved back to Bassett, and asked his girlfriend from high school, Carol Linke, to marry him. Almost immediately after their November 1947 wedding, Hugh and Carol took the Union Pacific train to Los Angeles to start a new life.
Soon after arriving in Los Angeles, Hugh began a 40 year career at Bank of America, first as a bookkeeper and teller. He would continue to move up at the Bank, ultimately joining the credit training program. After a number of years at various Southern California branches, Hugh was named the Vice President/Manager of the Santa Monica Auto Dealer Center. Within a few years, he was promoted to be the head of the San Fernando Valley Auto Dealer Center. In this position he would make many long time friends, ranging from the owners of the largest automobile dealerships to the employees of his office at all levels.
Upon retirement in 1986, Hugh and Carol enjoyed travelling and visiting their only son, Paul, and his family. Throughout his life he remained a lifelong supporter of Nebraska Husker football and an avid fan of Count Basie, Frank Sinatra and other jazz artists from the Big Band era.
Hugh is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Carol Linke Allen, his son Paul Mason Allen (Cathy), grandchildren Greg and Kate Allen, his brother William Bassett Allen (Alice) and his many nieces and nephews.
Per Hugh's request, there will be no funeral ceremony. In lieu of flowers or any other remembrance, a donation could be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation of America. Or you can make a donation of any lightly used home goods to Hugh and Carol's favorite charity, an American Cancer Society Discovery Thrift Store near you.
