Lieutenant Junior Grade Rathbone was the pilot of a F4U-4 Corsair fighter with Fighter Squadron 114 (884) aboard the carrier USS BOXER (CV-21). On August 4, 1951, immediately after take-off, his aircraft's engine suffered power failure and the plane crashed. His remains were not recovered.
