Michel (sic) Messing, 93, passed away Thursday afternoon of last week at his home east of Gilead, after an illness of only a few days. He had lived in this county over fifty years.
Funeral services were in charge of Rev. H. Henning, were held at the Messing home Monday afternoon and interment was in Meridian cemetery.
Michel(sic) Messing was born November 22, 1839 in Hasselhust Beden, Germany. He came to America in 1854 and lived in New York for ten years, moving in 1864 to Wisconsin, where he lived for a number of years.
He was married in 1861 to Catherine Ruch. To this union five sons and three daughters were born. His wife preceded him in death in 1879. Later in the year of 1879, he was united in marriage to Louseia Dietz. Three sons and seven daughters were born to them. These children all grew to manhood and womanhood. Three have since passed away: Mrs. Martha Jelinek of Powell in 1923; William of Mt. Home, Ark., in 1925; and John of Ocumpo, Calif., in 1929.
Mr. Messing came to Nebraska in 1878, locating on the farm where he lived continuously until his death. He was 93 years, 1 month and 20 days of age at the time of his death. Of a family of seven he was the last survivor.
He is survived by his wife and fifteen children: Michael, Jr. of Dubuque, Iowa; Lizzie Janin of Beventon, Oregon; Catherine Ritkhe of Alexandria; Jacob and Rudolf of Lincoln; Karlina Broren of Alexandria; Louesia Careton of St. Edward; Ida Collicot of Gilead; George of Hubbell; Amelia Meyers and Emma Henderson of Alexandria; Wilhelmine Weller of Honden, Ill.; August and Otto of Gilead; and Bertha Harms of Cloveton, Wyo.
He is also survived by fifty-eight grandchildren and a number of great-grandchildren.
