John William King, Sr. passed away on October 9, 2013 at the age of 90. A native of Wilmington, he was born April 30, 1923 to Frank R. and Pauline (Cleapor) King. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary Ellen (Hashagen) and sons, John, Jr. (June) of Wilmington and Frank (Jocelyn) of Gastonia; grandchildren, Joshua and Kelsey; and twin brother, William G. King of Gulf Breeze, Florida. John graduated from New Hanover High in 1939 and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before enlisting in the US Army Air Corps. He served in WWII as a B-17 navigator in the 15th Air Corps and earned the Purple Heart. After his discharge he joined his brother, Frank, in the construction business, F.R. King Construction Co. He was an active member of St. John's Episcopal Church as a lay reader and lay Eucharistic visitor for many years. He also served on the vestry as Junior and Senior Warden and on various committees. He was a member of the Wilmington Lions Club for more than 50 years serving a term as president and was also a district governor in Lions International. He received numerous commendations for his dedication to eyesight conservation and service to the blind. The family will be receiving visitors at Andrews Market Street Chapel from 6:00 to 7:00 p.m. Friday, October 11, 2013. The funeral service will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday, October 12, 2013 at St. John's Episcopal Church with Fr. Tom Barnett officiating. Internment will follow at Oakdale Cemetery.
