Mary Alice Tinsley Allen, 88, of Brevard, NC died on Tuesday, Oct 8, 2013. Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church in Brevard on Saturday, October 12, 2013 at 2 PM , followed by a graveside service at Gillespie Evergreen Cemetery. Mary Alice was born on December 7, 1924 in Brevard, daughter of the late Joseph Henry Tinsley and Bertha Mae McCall Tinsley. She graduated from Brevard High School in 1941 and Brevard College in 1943, attended Duke University and graduated in 1947 from Asheville Mission Hospital Training School for Nurses in Asheville, NC as a Registered Nurse. Mary Alice was a Cadet Nurse serving in Washington, DC when WWII ended. She married Ed Allen in 1949. They lived in Seattle, Washington, Stuttgart, Germany, and Baltimore, Maryland while he served in the military and then returned to Brevard when he retired from service. She worked as a registered nurse at Providence Hospital in Seattle, Transylvania Community Hospital and Ecusta (Olin) Corporation Medical Center in Brevard. She was a public health nurse with the Transylvania County Health Department for over 20 years, was Nursing Supervisor for 10 of those years and County Employee of the Year in 1987. A generation of children remembers Mrs. Allen as the nurse who gave them shots ("It only hurts for a second!"). She was a lifelong member of the First Baptist Church.
Mary Alice "never met a stranger" and had many devoted friends, some she knew since childhood. Everyone was welcome to come around to the back porch and visit over a cup of coffee. Mary Alice loved bowling and bowling tournaments, reading and the local library, playing rummicube and card games, crabbing at Fripp and fishing at Shallotte, music and dancing the jitterbug, traveling, the AWOL reunions and all family gatherings, being a Mission Belle and her precious dog Sunshine.
In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Joseph Edgar Allen in 1997, her sister Irene Tinsley Knight in 1988 and her beloved niece Martha Jo Knight Hall in 2009.
Survivors include her son Bill (Joe) Allen and wife Linda of Charlotte, NC, daughter Dawn Allen of Greensboro, NC, nephew Victor Knight of Raleigh, NC, nephew-in-law Forrest Hall of Shalotte, NC, great nephew and nieces Dan Hall, Krystal Knight and Victoria Knight, and great-great niece and nephew Danielle Hall and Justin Hall. She is also survived by devoted nieces and nephews from her husband's family – John Allen, Raymond Bullock, Carole Youmans, Kay Bank, Tommye Gadol, Leighton Tillman, Lynn Cody, Becky Pifer and their spouses and children.
The Allen family thanks Sandy Radford and Blanche Batson for their dedicated and loving care of Mary Alice over many months. Among many devoted friends, Katie Bagwell and Jean Baltezore were constant sources of support and care. Katie and Mary Alice have been best friends since kindergarten. Memorials may be made to the Mission Foundation Nurses Education Fund, Mission Hospitals, Asheville, NC, TRH Hospice, or the Friends of the Library, Transylvania County Library, Brevard, NC.
