"Stricken as he was ushering callers into his home at No. 81 Chestnut late Saturday afternoon, John Buchanan, office manager of the Otsego Forest Products Cooperative Association, Inc., died instantly, before medical assistance could reach him. Death was attributed to coronary thrombosis. Mr. Buchanan, with his wife, had been a resident of Cooperstown only since December 23d, when he came from Concord, N. H., to have temporary charge of office administration for the cooperative. During their stay, they had resided with Mr. and Mrs. H. Phil Brandner, friends in a former locality where both men had been associated with the United States Forest Service. Of Scottish descent, he was born in Malone, February 24, 1891, the son of John and Ellen Frasier Buchanan. He was graduated from Harvard University in 1910, majoring in journalism. From 1911 to 1914 he was employed with the International Paper company, in Northern Canada. At the opening of the World War, and for four years and ten months, he followed his father in hereditary command of the Scottish Highland Battalion, the Southern Argyles. At the close of the war, he was one of two members of the 1,200 man battalion who survived to return to England. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for valiant service ... On June 24, 1939, he married Miss Florence Mehaffey, West Alexander, Pa., who survives. He was a member of the Warren, Pa., Presbyterian church and of the Lions club of Manchester, N. H. Wherever his profession took him, he readily adapted himself to the public spirit and civic interests of the community. He had much talent in dramatics, and found pleasure in working with young people, particularly in amateur dramatics. His hobby was photography, and only a few moments before his passing he had been engaged outside his home getting snaps of snow scenes and members of the family. A prayer service for Cooperstown friends was held from the Ingalls Funeral home Monday at 5 p. m. The Rev. Arthur W. Mielke, Presbyterian pastor, officiated. The funeral and interment will be in West Alexander, Pa., Wednesday." ["The Freeman's Journal" (Cooperstown, NY), Jan. 29, 1941, Page 4]
