Elizabeth Watson Hall, the director of the county's Department of Social Services for more than 30 years who became a well-known antiques dealer after her retirement, died Friday, July 2, at her Princess Anne home. She was 81.

For many years, Hall operated an antiques business from her Somerset Avenue home. She was an expert in American furniture and export china.

Hall also had a strong interest in local history and historic preservation. She was a member and past president of the Somerset County Historical Society and charter member and past president of the Somerset County Historical Trust. For several years, Hall organized the Trust's annual Christmas Antiques Show at the Somerset County Civic Center in Princess Anne.

Born in Crisfield, she was a daughter of the late William J. Hall and Naomi Tawes Hall and the granddaughter of the late Captain Leonard S. Tawes, who was the skipper of the schooner City of Baltimore, and author of the book Coasting Captain.

She attended Mary Baldwin College in Staunton, Va., and graduated from Washington College in Chestertown with a Bachelor of Arts and the University of Pennsylvania with Master of Social Work.

She was a member of the St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Marion Station where she served as vestryman, and the Children's Home Foundation, where she served many years as Somerset County representative.

A memorial service will be held Thursday at 11 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Marion.
