American General, namesake of the town of Fleming, New York. Born circa 1748, Fleming fought for American independence while in his late 20's and early 30's, taking on leadership roles in combat during the Revolutionary War, and in organizing and training militia, work which he continued into the post-war years. He moved to present day Fleming in the 1790s, and was one of the Owasco Lake area's most prominent and highly regarded residents. Five months after his death at age 74, the Cayuga County town of Fleming (incorporated March 1823) was named in his honor.
