Mrs. Bauder was Hinckley’s oldest citizen and saw the village grow from its beginning. She spent her life here where she was born March 30, 1854, on the Coster homestead where the Miles Eastabrooks home is now located.
At that time Hinckley was known as Papoose Grove and her father owned practically all of the land now comprising the village.
Harriet Coster and John H. Bauder were married September 13, 1876, the Rev. Curry performing the ceremony. The couple were active leaders in the life of the community throughout their lives. Mr. Bauder was one of the first merchants of the village, conducting a general merchandise store at the location of the present post office for more than 30 years.
The couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1926, five years prior to Mr. Bauder’s death in 1931.
Mrs. Bauder led an active life and her strong influence was felt in all civic matters. She was a charter member of Oak Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star and served as its worthy matron about 50 years ago. She was a faithful member of the Hinckley Methodist Church.
She is survived by one sister, Mrs. Mary Williams. The only child, Mrs. Mabel Kaufman, died in February 1944. She was also preceded in death by her sister, Mrs. Susan Williams, and her brother, A. J. Coster.
Funeral services were held Sunday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Nash Funeral Home, the Rev. C. F. Chasteen officiating. Interment was in Greenwood Cemetery.
