John Wesley Irving Smith, 89, 325 S. Moore, died at 6:20 p.m. Nov. 5, 1981 in Ottumwa Hospital.
He was born Oct. 16, 1892 in Harper County, Kansas to William & Sara Catherine Trap Smith. A resident of Ottumwa most of his life, he was an employee of John Morrell & Co. for 27 years, retiring in 1957. He was a member of First Church of the Nazarene and married Ollie Taylor in 1911. She died in 1948. He married Ruth Adeline Widger Dec. 4, 1948.
Survivors: his wife; sons, Wesley of Springfield, Mo., Forrest of St. Louis, Mo., and Rosco of Orlando, Fla.; a daughter Geraldine DeVore of McKenzie, Ala.; 11 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandgrchildren; a sister, Letha Bivens of Ottumwa; three stepchildren; Dorothy Sterling of Agency, John Canterbury of Ottumwa and Richard Darland of Rock Island, Ill.; and 6 step grandchildren and 6 step great-grandchildren.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Monday at Reese Funeral Home, the Revs. Marion Dodson of First Church of the Nazarene & Ralph DeVore of Faith Baptist Church officiating. Burial: Memorial Lawn Cemetery.
The family will be at the funeral home 2 to 5 p.m. Sunday. Burial in Memorial Lawn Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Eugene & Harley Hart, Darrell Swope, Virgil & David Sterling and Ray Riley.
