Illness Fatal Wednesday To Dr. J. Carl Steiner, 64, Widely Known Specialist Dies in Hospital
Was Member of Prominent Family -- Quincy Resident 25 years.
Dr. J. Carl Steiner, 224 South Twenty-fourth, widely known eye, ear, nose and throat specialist, died Wednesday evening at 10:30 in Blessing hospital. He had been in failing health for some time and seriously ill of a heart condition for a number of weeks. His age was 64.
A son of George and Elizabeth Steiner, Dr. Steiner was born northwest of Loraine March 28, 1883. He was a member of a large family, two whom became prominent practicing physicians, while another became superintendent of Quincy schools.
Practiced in Rushville.
Following his graduation from the University of Illinois medical school, Dr. Steiner practiced as a physician for a time in Rushville. He decided to specialize in eye, ear, nose and throat work and returned to school in Chicago for special training. Upon completion of his studies he came to Quincy to enter practice. His offices were in the Illinois National bank building.
He was married in Chicago March 1909, to Miss Elena M. Hagans of Rushville.
Surviving are the widow; one daughter, Mrs. John Einhaus of Jackson, Miss.; a grandson, Jackie Einhaus; three brothers, E. E. Steiner of Los Angeles, M. E. Steiner of Quincy, and Glen Steiner of Stillwell, and two sisters, Mrs. John Tanner of Loraine and Mrs. Frank Adair of Quincy.
Dr. Steiner was preceded in death by two brothers, John Steiner, former superintendent of Quincy public schools, and Dr. Louis Leo Steiner of Danville, who died of a heart attack in Petoskey, Mich., three years ago while he and Dr. J. Carl Steiner were vacationing.
Held in High Regard.
As a professional man and as a citizen, Dr. Steiner was held in high regard. His quiet, unassuming manner and his devotion to his profession were outstanding characteristics. He was a member of Loraine lodge of Masons No. 893, and of Quincy Consistory; a member of the Adams County Medical society, the Mississippi Valley Medical society and of the Central Illinois Society of Ophthalmology and Otolaryngology. He was also a member of the Quincy Country club.
