The son of Samuel & Frances "Fanny" (Stettler) Charles, in 1860 he was a farmer living with his family in Pequea Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
A Civil War veteran, he enlisted at the stated age of twenty-five in Lancaster September 18, 1861, and mustered into federal service there September 24 as a private with Co. K, 79th Pennsylvania Infantry. On December 1, 1861, he was detached to the brigade as a teamster and exactly one year later to the pioneer corps, duty he continued until April 20, 1864, when he was detailed as a carpenter. All this suggests that he spent little time with his assigned company and regiment. He honorably discharged at term's end reportedly on October 27, 1864, at Atlanta, Georgia, but his compiled military service records contain no discharge date, and, if true, he left service several weeks after the expected time.
He married Elizabeth Lennert ca. 1865 and fathered Joseph Robert (b. 05/20/66), Franklin Lennert (b. 01/30/68), David Lennert (b. 08/30/70), Enos (b. 09/29/72), Samuel A. (b. 09/20/73), William (b. 07/01/75), Frances (b. 04/10/77 - married John Kreider Groff), John Lennert (b. 04/23/77), Harry Lennert (b. 03/27/79), Clara (b. 04/16/81 - married Benjamin Kreider), Margaret (b. 07/05/84, d. 12/04/84), and Cecelia Lennert (b. 01/29/86). He died at his home following several months of ill health.
