Ballston Spa—Dec. 12. (Special)—Anson F. Curtiss, a lifelong resident of the Town of Ballston, passed away at his home at Hop City [Road] at 12:45 o'clock Saturday night. Mr. Curtiss had been in failing health several months but was confined to his bed only a few days.

The funeral will take place at the late home, 2:30 o'clock tomorrow afternoon, the Rev. Willard P. Harmon, of Ticonderoga, a cousin of Mr. Curtiss, assisted by the Rev. J. Wallace Young, Ballston Center Presbyterian Church pastor, officiating. Burial will be in the Briggs Cemetery.

Mr. Curtiss was born October 6, 1849 in the house in which he died. He was the son of William and Martha Van Ostrand Curtiss ands ancestors were among the early settlers of the town.

Andrew and Jonathan Curtiss, brothers, came from England and settled in the Town many years ago. Mr. Curtiss' grandfather, Abijah Nicholas Curtiss, had a home, grist mill and sawmill on the Delavan Creek, on the Middle Line Road. It was here that William Curtiss, Mr. Curtiss' father, was born and as a boy worked in his father's mill. Later he purchased the farm at Hop City [Road] and it was on this farm that Anson F. Curtiss was born. He attended district school, then the Gilmore School in Ballston Spa and later the Whitestown Seminary, a boarding school near Utica.

Mr. Curtiss was a member of the Ballston Center Presbyterian Church and for many years was a member of the choir. He took an active interest in all matters pertaining to the welfare of the Town, was justice of the peace for two years and served as an assessor for 18 years. He was also deeply interested in the Briggs Cemetery, where many of his ancestors were buried, and a few years ago, largely through his efforts, a fund was raised, the interest from which is used for perpetual care for the cemetery. This afforded Mr. Curtiss great satisfaction.

On September 24, 1879, Mr. Curtiss and Miss Esther M. Smith of Galway were married and during 53 years of married life, he was devoted to his family and home. Besides his wife, he leaves six children, Mrs. Harry Robinson, Galway, Miss Jeannette H. Curtiss, Albany, W. Schuyler Curtiss, Hop City, Miss Alice L. Curtiss, Maplewood, N. J., Frank Platt Curtiss, Teaneck, N. J., and Mrs. Theodore Anabel, Schenectady, and twelve grandchildren, Lloyd, Curtiss, Winifred and Helen Robinson, Marion Bachelor, Irene and Theodore Anabel, Charlotte Jane, William Schuyler, Angeline and Laure Curtiss.
