SON OF REVOLUTIONARY WAR VETERAN CAPTAIN JOHN GEORGE OVERMIRE

Notes by Laurence Overmire, genealogist and Overmyer family historian:

The 1905 Overmyer History says Jacob was b. 27 Mar 1778, but his tombstone shows he was 56y 11m and 7 d when he died on 14 May 1735, which would put his birthdate at June 7, 1778.

According to E.S. Colburn's History of Fairfield and Perry Counties (1883), the immigrant Captain John George Overmire and his wife Barbara both died at the home of their son Jacob in Thorn Township, Ohio. The 1905 Overmyer History and Genealogy, however, says Jacob remained in Pennsylvania until after his father's death.

Jacob's last name is spelled "Overmire" on his tombstone, though some of his descendants changed the spelling to Overmyer.

NOTE: Some show Jacob born in New Berlin, Union County, PA, but Union County was formed out of Northumberland County in 1813. That same year, the town of Longstown became New Berlin.

WAS JACOB A WAR OF 1812 VETERAN?
There is some confusion about whether or not this Jacob Overmire was a War of 1812 veteran. The War of 1812 rosters do indeed show a "Lt. Jacob Overmier" in Capt. George Hosier's Company, but it is not clear which Jacob he was. There was another Jacob, son of Peter and Eva, who could also be the man in question. To make matters even more confusing, both of these men have military markers at their gravestones. It seems likely, however, that only one of these Jacobs is the true veteran who served in George Hosier's Company, but at this time we cannot positively identify which one.
