Joseph Behunin Graduated from Brigham Young University with a BS in 1966. After Graduation from BYU he entered United States Navy Aviation Officer Candidate Program. He was commissioned an Ensign in March of 1967. Joseph was married to the former Nancy Maughan on December 8th 1964. Joseph and his wife had three children, 2 sons and a daughter. Joseph Served an LDS Mission to the Eastern Canadian Mission from 1960-1962.

Joseph Behunin was a well-decorated rescue pilot who flew helicopters for the US Navy. He served in HC-7CSAR which was the most decorated squadron in Vietnam. Joe flew an H2-clementine, and rescued several downed pilots. He flew missions in Japan, Vietnam, and The Philippines. He was awarded the Air Medal, Navy Commendation Medal, Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, Meritorious Unit Citation, and Vietnamese Service Medal. Joseph Died in a helicopter crash approximately 7 1/2Miles of the coast of Imperial Beach California. Joseph was stationed out of San Diego and his family resided in Chula Vista. Josephs helicopter crashed on the 11th of May 1972, his body was recovered a few days after the crash. Joseph was buried on the 22nd of May 1972 in the Ft Douglas Cemetery in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Joseph Behunin's shipmates still get teary eyed after 30 years when they talk about him. They said he was always true to the faith, and he never faltered. His example brought some members of his squadron into the church. He was a great leader, friend, and example doing extraordinary things in perilous times.
