Civil War Union Soldier, Sailor. He was mustered in as a Private in Company F, 4th New Jersey Volunteer Infantry on August 15, 1861. He was promoted to Corporal in May 28, 1863, and re-enlisted on December 26, 1863. However, on April 18, 1864 he was transferred out of the 4th New Jersey to join the Union Navy, with whom he served through the rest of the war.

Miles & Annie separated in 1866
He married Harriet Storms (b 1851) about 1869 and had 4 children. Her death and location have not been found. Last found, so far, on the 1885 NJ Census,
