Obituary
Earl R. Sims, 83, well-known retired farmer and former Adams County treasurer and member of the Board of Supervisors, died Thursday (April 28, 1977) at 9:38 a.m. in Sunset Home, where he had been a resident since November, 1972.
Mr. Sims was born July 30, 1893, in Burton Township, a son of John T. and Mary Cate Sims. He attended Augusta High School and Gem City Business College. He married Mae Golden Dean, Oct. 25, 1917, in the home of her parents, near Liberty. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary Oct. 22, 1967, with a reception hosted by their sons.
Mr. and Mrs. Sims farmed in Burton Township, near Liberty, until he retired in 1946, and they moved to Quincy. Three years later, Mr. Sims accepted the post of cashier for the Liberty Bank, serving in that position for 10 years. He became president of the bank board, while working as cashier, and was elected county treasurer in 1958, retiring again in 1962. He was a former member of the Adams County Board of Supervisors and was appointed supervisor of assessments in 1950. He was a lifelong member of the Adams County Farm Bureau and former member of its board. He was a former member of the board of trustees of Sunset Home.
Mr. Sims was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church and the Builders Class of Vermont Street United Methodist Church. He was active in Masonic work and a member of Liberty Lodge AF&AM, Quincy Consistory, Ansar Temple, Quincy Shrine and Quincy High Twelve Club. He was a former member of the Lions Club.
Surviving are the widow, a resident of Sunset Home; two son, S. Dean and Melvin E. Sims, both of Liberty; two brothers, Floyd Sims of Quincy and Loren Sims of Palos Verdes, Calif.; six grandchildren, Randy Sims of Liberty, Mrs. Judith Walsten of Cedar Falls, Iowa, Douglas Sims of Denver, Colo., Susan Sims of Providence, R.I., Mrs. Patricia Elian of Doha, Qatar, and Sara Sims of Champaign, and six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Ray Sims, and a sister, Mrs. Bessie Sickles.
Funeral services will be held Saturday at 3 p.m. in Zehender Robinson Stormer Funeral Home. The Rev. William Jones and the Rev. Stanley Haxton will officiate. Burial will be in Quincy Memorial Park.
The family suggests that memorials be made to Sunset Home or Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church.
