Norm was an avid genealogist, aided by his wife, Edith (Killinsworth) Veland. During the 1970s the pair diligently wrote to relatives in their parents' native homeland, Norway, collecting data and details of life across the Atlantic. They corresponded with others in the United States, seeking photos and information for the book they planned to publish in honor of their parents. Norm notes sending requests to courthouses, churches and other repositories, working to obtain this information years before the era of the internet and online genealogy. It appears from these letters that they were searching for details on both the their maternal (Gravdahl) and paternal (Veland) families. What became of their research after their deaths is unknown, but what is known for sure is that Norm would be elated to know he had a memorial on this site, connected to his parents and ancestors.
