Civil War Union Army Soldier. While serving as an enlisted man in the 27th Indiana Volunteer Infantry, he was one of five Indiana soldiers who found General Robert E. Lee's "Lost" orders, Special Orders No. 191 near Frederick, Maryland on September 13, 1862. The find would reveal that General Lee had split up his forces, and prompted Union General George B. McClellan to move into action against the Rebels. This led to the bloodiest single day in the Civil War: the Battle of Antietam.
