A sea-captain and merchant by trade, Alfred had natural talents for cabinet making, mechanics, and music, playing flute, piano and organ; he set up the pipe organ in what is now known as Pembroke Church (St. John's) in Pembroke, Bermuda.
He died of yellow fever aboard the ship, "Medora" at Nevis, and according to church records, was interred at St. Paul's Anglican church in Charlestown.
