Moses RITTER, Esq., one of the oldest and most respected citizens of this county died at his residence, in this place on Friday the 25th inst., of the 74th year of his age. Mr. RITTER was born in North Carolina, in 1797, and emigrated, to this State settling in Salem, Washington County, in the year 1816, the same the State was admitted into the Union. He married in Washington County, Miss Achsah O'NEAL, who still survives him. Shortly after he moved to Daviess County, and in 1821 he settled in Newberry, being the first white man that ever settled in that section. In 1826 he moved to this place where he has resided ever since, except probably some five years, during which time he owned and run what is now known as the old RITTER Mill. Mr. RITTER first settled on a farm, which is now the residence of Col. E. H. C. CAVINS, which he cleared out and cultivated entire. He was for many years a Justice of the Peace, and in all his official acts he gained the praise of all with whom he had been brought in contact, for his strict integrity and upright course. He was the first man who ever discovered iron in this county, and at the time was made light of for the sanguine sprit he manifested. But after the experiments, which proved the truth of his declarations, he had the satisfaction of seeing them a reality. As a citizen he was just, liberal and enterprising. Being an honest and conscientious man, who never branched out into large transactions for fear of endangering his friends, he never accumulated immense wealth, but died leaving a handsome competence to his widow, a finished education to each of his children, and a good name to those connected with him.
