Obituary
Gustavus Adolphus Whiteford died very suddenly at his home in Honey Creek township, Sunday, Aug. 17, at 3:30 p.m., at the advanced age of 75 years and 10 days.

He had apparently been enjoying good health, and was in especially good spirits on the day of his death. The bereavement was a great shock and surprise to his family and friends.

Mr. Whiteford was the youngest son of a family of 12 children. He was born August 7, 1837, near Paris, Furquer county, Va., at which place he resided until four years of age. He then moved to Licking county, Ohio, where he grew to manhood. At the age of 21 he was married to Miss Elizabeth Reese.

In 1854 he came to Iowa, residing for one year in Iowa City; then came to Iowa county and located near Millersburg. Here his wife died, leaving an only son, Charlie. March 30, 1864 [1863], he was again married to Miss Sarah Beach,. Eight children blessed this union, two of whom preceded him. A wife and seven children mourn the loss of a loving husband and father. The oldest child, Charlie, resides at Williamsburg; Ralph in Clay county, Iowa; Gustavus and Anna Whiteford Disterhoft in Stone Point, Texas. Three children, Burr, Rhoderick and Mamie are still living at home.

We know not what it is, this sleep so deep and chill;
The folded hands, the awful calm, the ---- so pale and chill.
The ids that will not lift again, though we may call and call;
The strange white solitude of peace that smiles over all.
We know not what it means this desolate heart-pain-,
This dread to take our daily way and walk in it again.
We know not to what other sphere the loved who leave us go,
Nor why we're left to wonder still, nor why we do not know.
But this we know, our loved and dead, if they should come this day,
Should come and ask us what is "life?" not one of us could say.
Life is a mystery, as deep as ever death can be,
Yet, oh, how dear it is to me, this life we live and see.
The child who enters life comes out with knowledge so distant
So those who suffer death --- must go as little children went.
Nothing is known, but I believe that God is overhead;
And as life is to the living, so death is to the dead.
