John, a resident of Velarde, passed away peacefully with his family surrounding him. He was predeceased by his first wife of 40 years Lorraine Apodaca; daughter Theresa Apodaca; stepson Matthew Valdez; parents Matias and Isabel Apodaca; and brothers: Billy and Raymond Apodaca.
John was survived by his wife Pauline Apodaca of Velarde; son Earl Apodaca and daughter Janet Apodaca both of Velarde; stepson Leonard Valdez (wife Becky) of La Posta; brothers: Henry Apodaca (wife Zelma) and Manuel Apodaca (wife Susie) all of Raton; sisters-in-law: Cleo and Elaine Apodaca, Ida Garcia (husband David), Maxine Saavedra (husband Michael), and Jean Maez (husband Willie); brothers-in-law: Joe Garcia (wife Gloria), James Garcia, and Henry Catanach; 6 grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
John was employed for 20 years at Price Dairies in Albuquerque and Furrs Supermarket for 20 years until his retirement in 1999. He enjoyed going to the casinos and working in his yard.
Public visitation and Rosary were on 21 Feb 2010 in the Chapel of Peace of DeVargas Funeral Home & Crematory. Mass of Christian burial was on 22 Feb 2010 at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church in Velarde. Burial followed in the Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Cemetery in Velarde. Pallbearers: Sam Garcia, David Garcia, Daniel Apodaca Sr., Willie Maez, Henry Catanach, and Charles Gilbert. Honorary pallbearers were John's grandchildren: Isaiah Apodaca, Jared Apodaca, Cruz Valdez, Vivian Valdez, Jackie Valdez, and Lexi Valdez.
