Stephen "Jack" Johnson Phillips was a son of George Wesley Phillips and Lucy Connelly Phillips. He was born in Mercer county, Kentucky on May 29, 1840. He married Margaret Louisa "Maggie" Kirby,(Born November 14, 1850 - Died November 18, 1910), daughter of Reuben Kirby and Virginia Abello Kirby, on September 29, 1867 in Linn county.
They had five children, four boys and an infant that died June 12, 1875, when six days old. The boys were, from left to right: Lon Edward Phillips (1876-1961); William Louis Phillips (1868-1958); Walter Herman Phillips (1871-1945)and Emmett Linn Phillips (1879-1944).
