ALTAMONT - Leta Marie Conley, 89, of Altamont died at 3:59 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 15, 2005, at Freeman West Hospital in Joplin. She was born Aug. 4, 1916, in rural Bartlett, to John and Jessie (Johnston) Neely. She grew up in Labette County near Edna and attended rural schools. She and Joseph D. "Doby" Conley were married Jan. 15, 1936, at the First Methodist Church in Parsons. Following their marriage, they lived in Edna until moving to Coffeyville in March 1937. In 1942 they moved to Parsons, where he worked for the M-K-T Railroad for 34 years. They moved to Altamont in 1970. They celebrated their 60th anniversary on Jan. 13, 1996 at their home in Altamont. Her husband preceded her in death on June 11, 1996. Mrs. Conley was a member of the United Methodist Church in Altamont by transfer from the United Methodist Church in Parsons in 1970. She was also a member of the United Methodist Women's ladies group; the Ladies Auxiliary of the United Transportation Union; National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees; American Association of retired Person; and the Pleasant Hour Club. In the 1950s, she had been a sewing instructor for the Meadowlark 4-H Club. She was a home maker and her hobby was her family and friends. She loved her family and enjoyed time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed sewing, cooking and making quilts. From 1970 to 1976, she was an Avon sales lady in Altamont. Mrs. Conley is survived by one daughter, Sharon Giefer of Parsons; three sons, Leland Conley of Gainsville, Ga., Leon Conley and his wife Celina of Arlington, Texas, and Don Conley and his wife Sandy of Redding, Calif.; eleven grandchildren, Rick Giefer and his wife Nancy of St. Paul, Mike Giefer and wife Karrie, Tom Giefer and wife Becky, Ron Giefer and wife Pam, and Connie Nance and husband Richard, all of Parsons, Sherri Smith and husband Brad of Springfield, Mo., Kim Rinehart and husband Bryan of Plevna, Dawn Prejean and husband Allen and Chris Conley and wife Aimee, both of Arlington, Texas, Shawn Conley and wife Patti of Aledo, Texas, and Christy Thomas and husband Trent of Olathe; 24 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Lois Graves and her husband Art of Bartlett, Normalee Ragel and husband Bill of Garden City, and Lila Volz of Muskogee, Okla.; one brother, Burle Neely and wife Mary of Coffeyville; and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by an infant son, Ronald Lee Conley. The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Altamont United Methodist Church with the Rev. Tom Reazin officiating. Burial will be in Lake Creek Cemetery in Bartlett. Family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. Sunday at Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home in Altamont. Memorials are suggested to either the Altamont United Methodist Church or the Lake Creek Cemetery Fund. These may be left t or mailed to the Bath-Forbes-Hoffman Funeral Home, 510 S.
