MATT SLEGER
(1884 - 1954)

Matt Sleger, 70, of 1228 Arlington Ave., Manitowoc, died early Thursday at St. Luke Hospital, Chicago, following a two months illness.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Mittnacht Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. E.A. Radey will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc.

He was born on a farm near Menchalville in 1884 and when a young man assisted his father, Matt, Sr., in operation of the farm. In 1906 (sic) he married Miss Julia Korinek and they located on a farm near the village in the town of Franklin.

He was an ardent musician, playing numerous instruments and founded and directed Slegers orchestra, which played for many social events in the county. In 1948 the couple moved to Manitowoc, where he became a carpenter and builder. Before coming to Manitowoc he was town treasurer of Franklin for six years and was active in the planning and building of the St. Joseph Catholic Church at Kellnersville. He also served on the church board. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of the Holy Innocents congregation.

Surviving are his wife; four daughters, Miss Tillie, Mrs. Emil Pelishek, Mrs. Ralph Karlin and Mrs. Frank Mraz, all of Manitowoc; six sons, Louis and Quirin of Menchalville, Albert of Buffalo, N.Y., James, Joseph and Gerald of Manitowoc; seven brothers, Frank and Jacob of Kellnersville, Emil and John of Menchalville, Joseph, William and Edward of Manitowoc; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph Tisler of Menchalville, Mrs. Edward Ledvina of Maribel: 26 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Friday where the Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
