Lina Maria (Clemetson) Steen was born near Kongsberg, Norway to Nels and Risa Clemetson. She came to America by sailboat with her parents and four other siblings. Lina was 20 at this time. They were early settlers in Clinton township. Shortly after arriving, she met John Peter Steen and they married in 1871. They lived in Steen all of their married life and had eleven children, 3 of whom died young, Nathan, Gilbert and Freddie.
The children that grew to adulthood where Peter Nicholas, Richard Walter, George Alfred, Julius Almer, William Harold, Ida Sophia, Ada Louise and John August.
The town of Steen, Minnesota was named after Lina's husband (and brother Ole), who donated 20 acres of their land for the town.
In 1897 Lina Steen died from consumption, at the age of nearly 46 years. Later in Oct. 1897, her husband John Peter died of Cancer at the age of 56.
