Lt. Col. Edward Joseph Kelly
August 19, 1930 - July 17, 2013
Lieutenant Colonel Edward Joseph Kelly ("Coach"), 82 passed away on Wednesday, July 17, 2013 in Slidell. He was born August 19, 1930 in New York City and grew up at Boys Town, a home for orphaned boys in Brooklyn, New York. A Slidell resident for the last 8 years, Ed spent his childhood in New York but lived for years in New Orleans and overseas in the Dominican Republic and Panama.
Ed attended St. Agnes High School and graduated from Western Maryland College in 1954 with a major in economics and a minor in physical education where he played football and baseball for the school. Upon graduation Ed attended the Infantry Officer Course and quickly rose up the ranks, serving as a commanding officer in Korea from 1957-1958. From 1959-1966 Ed was stationed at various posts including Ft. Benning, GA where he attended the Advanced Officer Course; as an assistant professor of Military Science in Roswell, NM; and as an instructor at the USA School of the Americas in Panama. In 1967 Ed served a tour of duty in Vietnam. From 1968-1971 Ed served as a Battalion Commander, Special Forces Commander and was a department head at the Military Assistance Institute.
In 1971 Ed and his family were transferred to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic where he served as the Chief of the Military Army Advisory Group. Ed also started the national swimming program in the Dominican Republic by forming Los Caimanes Del Caribe; a swim club comprised of Dominican natives and children living in the Dominican Republic from countries as far away as Spain, Italy, Australia, and Canada. Los Caimanes flourished by growing very quickly and becoming a frequent winner in swim meets throughout the Caribbean and the United States. Ed mentored hundreds of youth who he pushed to excel and do their best. They continue to honor and thank him over thirty five years later. Several of those swimmers still compete and have held world swimming records. In 1995 Ed was formally thanked by the Dominican government and Olympic committee for his contributions to the country and to its youth.
In 1977 after being transferred to New Orleans to serve as the Deputy Senior Army Advisor to the Louisiana National Guard, Ed formed the Hurricane Swim Club in Slidell. The Hurricanes became a dominant force on the Louisiana swimming scene and around the country. He continued training and mentoring his swimmers across multiple generations of families for over thirty six years. During his tenure, Ed helped countless swimmers get college swimming scholarships and tirelessly pushed them to reach their potential and do their best, with several becoming senior national qualifiers. Ed was named Louisiana Senior Coach of the year in 1982, 1989, 1991 and 1992 and Louisiana Age Group Coach of the Year in 1990, 1991, 1992 and 1996. Ed was also the coach of the Northshore High School swim team and led them to undefeated seasons and Division I State Championships. Because of his dedication to swimming and to youth, Ed was honored with many awards including proclamations from the cities of Picayune, Covington, Mandeville, and Slidell, each declaring a "Coach Ed Kelly Day".
Ed was the beloved husband of Mary Lou Kelly for 57 years, who preceded him in death. He is survived by his children: Michael Kelly (wife Gaylyn), Kathleen Kelly, Shawn Kelly, Patrick Kelly (wife Kristina), and Colleen Kelly. He is also survived by 10 Kelly grandchildren: Garrett, Ian, Brennan, Grant; Carlos, Victoria, Christian, Alexander, Isabella, and Lacey Moneymaker.
Very few people touch so many in such a profound way, and Ed was one of those people. His personality transcended gender, age, culture, and nationality. His core principles of work hard, do your best, do the right thing, be all you can be, bounce back in the face of adversity, changed and improved so many lives. One can only imagine the ripple effect on the individuals and families he touched and the generations that he changed. Ed was truly loved by so many people because he didn't just say those words, he lived them. A fighter till the very end.
Visitation will occur at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Slidell located at 3924 Berkley Street on Saturday, July 27th, from 10:30am-1:00 pm. A Funeral Mass will immediately follow visitation. Burial will immediately follow at Honaker Forest Lawn Cemetery located at 1751 Gause Blvd. West. In lieu of flowers, an appreciated form of sympathy would be a donation to Boys Town online at https://secure.boystown.org/Donate/ or by mail to: Boys Town National Headquarters, 200 Flanagan Boulevard, PO Box 8000, Boys Town, NE 68010
